Cesspools
Cesspools are sealed tanks which collect household sewage. As there is no drainage from the tank they require emptying on a regular basis. Most modern domestic tanks have a capacity in excess of 4,000 gallons (18,000 litres).
Septic Tanks
Septic tanks are the preferred option providing the surrounding ground has reasonable drainage. The solid waste is collected in the Septic tank which is partially broken down by natural bacteria. The liquid then drains away via a soakaway or filter bed. Septic tanks require less emptying but slurry will build up and for an average household require emptying annually to keep the system working efficiently.
Treatment Plants
Treatment plants are becoming the preferred system by local authorities and in some cases insisting on Treatment plants in preference to Septic tanks. Treatment plants require slightly more maintenance with at least 6 monthly de-sludge and regular service contracts.
